A Foolish Stag(Moral Story)

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

A Foolish Stag

In a world dazzled by appearances, it’s easy to mistake shine for substance. The phrase “All that glitters is not gold” reminds us to look beyond surface beauty and seek true worth. Not everything that sparkles holds value—and sometimes, the things we underestimate are our greatest assets. This timeless moral warns against being deceived by looks, urging us to measure things by their deeper quality, not just their outer glow.

Once upon a time in a lush forest, there lived a proud and elegant stag. His antlers were magnificent—towering like a crown and glistening in the sunlight. He admired them every day in the lake’s still waters. But his legs? He thought them far too thin and spindly. He disliked them so much that he often wished he could swap them for something grander.

One morning, as he was grazing near the lake, he caught sight of his reflection again. “Ah, what noble antlers,” he sighed, “But these ugly legs! If only I looked as perfect all over.”

Just then, a lion emerged from the thicket. The stag bolted into the forest, his legs carrying him swiftly through the dense undergrowth. But his grand antlers—so wide and branch-like—snagged on a low-hanging branch. He twisted and turned, trying to escape, but it was too late. The lion caught up and pounced.

With his last breath, the stag realized his foolishness: the legs he despised had tried to save him, and the antlers he adored had sealed his fate.

🦌 Moral: All that glitters is not gold.

However, his repeated failures expose his lack of understanding and highlight how domestic responsibilities require skill, attention, and effort. Through humour and role reversal, O’Casey critiques the assumption that household duties are insignificant and naturally suited to women. 2. Do you think the play suggests that certain tasks are gender-specific, or does it emphasize the importance of experience over gender? Explain your answer. Rather than reinforcing gender-based roles, the play underscores the value of experience and competence. Darry assumes he can effortlessly manage housework simply because he’s a man, but his inability to do so reveal...
